Robert Alan Volkmann

Robert Alan Volkmann, age 81, of Red Wing, MN passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 21, 1938 in Raymond, MN to Albert and Ruth (Engel) Volkmann. He lived in various towns as a young child until his family moved to Red Wing, MN in 1943 where he has lived since. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1956. He went to college at St. Cloud University and Wisconsin State College at River Falls. He was drafted into the Army in 1961 and was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia and Colorado until his honorable discharge in 1963. He continued to serve in non-active duty until 1967. He married Marie (Tveten) on July 17, 1971.
He drove semi-truck for over 60 years. He also drove school bus and charter bus for Lee Line for 31 years part-time. He drove stock cars in his younger days. Bob enjoyed camping, golfing, snowmobiling, bowling, playing cards and bingo, and watching his grandkids in all their activities. His family was his pride and joy.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 54 for 39 years and was very active in various committees and roles at the Legion. He was also a member of the Redmen Club.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, of 47 years; son Trevor (Charlotte) Volkmann; daughter, Tammy (Jerod) Thomforde; grandchildren, Justin, Emma, and Natalie Thomforde, Hazel, Lillian, and Evelyn Volkmann. Siblings, Kay Gillmer, Betty (Jim) Rogers, Peter (Bette) Volkmann and Suzie Palmquist. He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law: Lois (John) Dyreson, Ione (Leonard) Brokaw, and David (Kristi) Tveten along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ruth Volkmann, mother and father-in-law, Henry and Esther Tveten, brothers-in-law, Dick Gillmer, Gary Palmquist, and Don Peterson, sister-in-law, Jeanette Peterson, and nephew, Barrett Volkmann.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Dana Jackson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 13 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
