Robert James Murphy, 84 of Lake City, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Lake City. He was born January 3, 1929 in Wabasha, Minnesota, son of Martin and Marie Theresa (Gludt) Murphy. He grew up and attended his schooling in the Conception area where he worked on the family farm. He joined the Army and served throughout the Korean conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he began working at the Ford Tractor Dealership in Plainview. On August 26, 1952 he married Mary Agnes Lillie in Theilman, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Plainview, Minnesota. He began working at the High Plains Co-op, the former Midland Co-op, in the fertilizer plant, where he eventually moved up to become the general manager. In 1995, he retired and moved to Lake City. He was a lifetime member of the Plainview VFW and a member of the Plainview volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. He was an avid fisherman, and was just starting to discover his wood carving skills. He dearly loved spending time with his family and his family loved spending time with him.
Robert is survived by Phyllis Brende of Lake City; three sons, Craig of Rapid City, SD, Steven (Melodee) of Rochester, Terri of Kellogg; three daughters, Julianne (Bill) Schierts of Lake City, Tami (Scott) Jones of Prior Lake, Tracy of Lake City; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; 1 sister Marcella Osborne of Blaine, MN; one brother Donald (Lorraine) Murphy of Conception, MN.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Agnes; six sisters, Dorothy Harlan, Mary Majerus, Eleanor Rasmussen, Eileen Miller, Margaret Murphy, Mildred Slawson; two brothers William and Gerald Murphy and brother-in-law, Francis Lillie.
A celebration of life will be from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel. A committal service will be held on Monday July 29, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joachim's Cemetery in Plainview Minnesota, with Father Joseph Pete officiating.
