Robert (Bob) Borst

October 28, 1926 — March 9, 2016

Robert James Borst, 89 of Rochester, passed away Wednesday March 9, 2016 at Seasons Hospice House. Bob was born October 28, 1926 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. He attended school in Dodge Center, Minnesota. Bob served his country twice; the Navy in World War II on the USS John R. Craig, and the Army during the Korean War as a training instructor at Camp Carson in the 698th Personnel Unit. A paver bears his name at Soldiers' Field in Rochester. Bob was honored to be part of the first Rochester Honor Flight to Washington, DC on October 8, 2008. Coffee at Grandma's Kitchen with his fellow Korean War vets was a favorite pasttime.

Bob was involved in boy scout activities as a young boy and also achieved the Silver Beaver Leadership Award for Troop 21 when his own son was a scout. Bob also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching the Minnesota Twins. His skilled craftmanship as a carpenter is evident in the home he built as well as many other buildings in Rochester. He rebuilt several antique cars, and spent many hours in the garage repairing all manner of equipment. He was an active member of Evangel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Harriett Borst; daughter Sue (James) Thomas of Princeton, Louisiana; son Greg (Susan) Borst of Denver, Colorado; stepdaughter Pauline Kirschner of Rochester; and stepson Paul (Jane) Roesti of Four Seasons, Missouri. He was blessed with 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A sister, Betty Christensen of Rochester, also survives. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlys; his parents, a sister, and 2 grandsons.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Andrew Greenlund, Dr. Kwon, and Dr. Quevedo and Mayo Clinic staff for their care and concern during Bob's illness. We also want to thank the Seasons Hospice staff for their compassion, care, and understanding during the past 10 days.

A funeral service will be held Monday March 14th at 11:00 AM at Evangel United Methodist Church, 2645 N Broadway Ave., Rochester. Pastor Phil Strom will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday March 13th at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel, 1624 37th Street NW, and will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Monday.
