Robert F. "Bob" Bird

Robert F. Bird age 87, of Wanamingo; died on October 25, 2019 at the Norris Square in Cottage Grove. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at 11:00 am at Mahn Family Funeral Home- Larson Chapel in Zumbrota with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Zumbrota Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Wanamingo Veterans Honor Guard.
Robert Francis Bird Jr. was born on October 18, 1932 in Minneapolis, MN to Robert F. and Hazel (nee Christians) Bird. Robert grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from North High School in 1951. On November 19, 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged on September 1, 1954. Bob enrolled at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in Agriculture in 1958. On December 20, 1958 he married Marlys A. "Molly" Christiansen at Como Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul. They purchased a farm and moved to Wanamingo in the late 1960's. Bob worked as a grain inspector for the State of Minnesota for thirty seven years, retiring on 1994. In addition to working for the State, Bob and Molly ran their farm and raised seven children. Bob moved to Lake Elmo in 2017. Bob enjoyed reading, working around the farm, going to movies, watching TV and visiting Molly at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis, where he socialized with the staff and other veterans.
Bob is survived by his seven children, Robert "Bob" Bird of Mazeppa, Sally Bird of Shakopee, Sandy (John) Konstandinou of Cottage Grove, Matt Bird of Plano, TX, Donna (Jeff) Koehler of Rochester, Tom Bird of Memphis, TN, and Cheryl (Kurt) Lee of Marine on St. Croix; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, John (Janet) Bird of Reno, NV and sister, Joann (Richard) Atkinson of Zumbrota.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys "Molly", parents, and brothers, Jim and Pete.
