Richard Arnold Wobig

April 1, 1932 — March 11, 2013

Richard A. (Dick) Wobig, age 80, of Pine Island, died peacefully Monday (Mar. 11, 2013) at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. Richard Arnold Wobig was born Apr. 1, 1932, on the family farm in Pine Island Township, Goodhue County, to Arnold and Elfreida (Groszbach) Wobig. After graduating from Pine Island High School, Dick went to work for Minnesota Cheese Producers as a butcher and manager of the locker plant. In January of 1958 he purchased a Greenway Cooperative petroleum bulk route and worked independently for 37 years, retiring in 1994.
Dick married Norma Closner in 1951, and on Nov. 11, 2011 they celebrated 60 years of marriage. After living in Pine Island for the first 13 years of their marriage, they bought a hobby farm on the outskirts of town. They raised beef cattle, had a large and beautiful garden, and enjoyed family life there for 35 years. After retirement Dick and Norma liked living in Pine Island during the warmer months and wintering in Tucson, AZ. They felt at home in both places, and enjoyed many years spending time in their homes with family and friends. They also enjoyed traveling and saw many sights across the U.S. and around the world.
Dick liked being involved in his community. He was a volunteer fireman for 25 years, serving as Relief Association president for two terms and crew chief for several years. He also drove school bus for 30 years. Dick enjoyed cooking for his fellow fireman, especially for the annual turtle feeds (snappers caught from his pond on the hobby farm). Later in his life he had a great time serving breakfast to his Minnesota and Arizona friends and neighbors. Dick was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, singing in the choir for 15 years and serving as church council treasurer for 4 years.
Dick is survived by his wife, Norma, his son Larry (Ann) Wobig of Plymouth, MN; daughters, Peggy (Paul) Evenson of Rochester; and Tammy (Wayne) Freimund of Missoula, MT, grandchildren, Cortney (Luke) Olson, Heather (Spencer) Hagen, Ben (fiance Megan) Freimund, Chris Freimund, and his beloved great granddaughter, Laney Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Robert (Bob) Wobig. Dick lost his mother early in life, at the age of 6 years old.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
