Richard Clarence Walter, 81, Red Wing, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at his residence at Potter Ridge. He was born March 30, 1931 in Buffalo Lake, MN, the son of Clarence Andrew and Ruth (Schafer) Walter. He was a 1949 graduate of Buffalo Lake High School and then served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Avis Mae Hagberg on June 29, 1951. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. During his time in college he also worked as a Cabinetmaker Apprentice. They moved to Red Wing and he took a job working for the University of Minnesota Extension Service until his retirement. He was an active member of United Lutheran Church where he was a member of Men in Mission, the Red Wing Kiwanis and the Red Wing Chapter of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. He enjoyed his family, woodworking, gardening, yard work, fishing, trips to Canada with his sons, going to the lake, and attending sporting events.
Survivors include: his wife of 61 years, Avis; his son Jon (Stephanie) Walter, and their children, Brittany (Bryce) Peterson and great grandson, Lane Walter Peterson, Ben and Jessica Walter and Jamie Walter; son, James (Rebecca) Walter of Hortonville, WI and their children, Madalyn and Alexandra Walter; brothers: Allen (Marie) of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, Ken (Nancy) of Apple Valley, Loren (Carol) of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota and Neil (Gerri) of Inver Grove Heights; and one sister, Judith( Don) Williams of Burnsville.
Memorial service will be 1 p. m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Bob Iverson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
