Richard Allen Safe, 69, of Welch, died Saturday, March 26, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family and his loving dog, Kassie. He was born on November 14, 1946 in Red Wing to Glen and Elsie (Nash) Safe. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1965. For six years he served in the Army National Guard. On May 19, 1973 he married Suzanne Gustafson at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. He worked for Meyer Industries and Luhman Construction before working 32 years as a welder specialist with NSP/Xcel Energy, retiring in 2005. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54. He played drums in the Boathouse Band, which was the opening band for the Mississippi Shuffle for 25 years, and the Keynotes Band. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, woodworking and being on his hobby farm and driving his tractors. His family recalls that he was always willing to lend a helping hand, enjoyed writing poetry, always had a joke to tell and was always ready to perform a card trick.
Survivors include his wife Sue; two brothers, Willis Safe and Wayne "Whitey" (Barb) Safe both of Red Wing; nieces and nephews, Mike, Dee, Scott, Mark and Tim Safe, Julie Eckstrom, Jenn Mooney, Jennifer Kruckow and Indeah Yockey; 16 grand nieces and nephews and three great, great nieces and nephews; brother-in-law's, Jim Gustafson of Burnsville, Wayne and Steve Gustafson both of Red Wing and sister-in-law, Nancy (Al) Amann of Fountain City, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Safe and three sister-in-law's, Kathy Quinn Safe, Delores Dahl Safe and Mary Bailey Gustafson.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Full military honors will follow the service. Private family burial will be at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Cemetery of Welch. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Legion prayer service on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
