Richard F. Ottoson

August 11, 1933 — March 24, 2013

Richard Frederich Ottoson, 79, died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at his home in Red Wing. He was born August 11, 1933 in Red Wing, the son of Elmer and Gladys (Boatman) Ottoson. He was a 1951 graduate of Red Wing Central High School. In 1952 he applied and successfully tested for the Aviation Cadet Program. After learning of the lengthy delay to begin pilot training, he volunteered for the military draft. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1955 with the 29th Regimental Combat Team and later with the 75th RCT (reactivated Merrill's Marauders) on Okinawa. He married Wanda Tesmer in Lake City in 1957. Richard received a B.A. in Business Administration from Winona State College in 1958. From 1958 until 1969 he was employed as Chief Accountant and Supervisor of corporate taxes and property at Watkins Products, Inc. in Winona, Minnesota. From 1969 until retiring in 1995, he served as the Business Manager at the Minnesota Correctional Facility- Red Wing. Richard was a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54, AMVETS, VFW, Izaak Walton League, Red Wing Conservation Club, MN State Employees Association, life member of the Red Wing Elks Lodge BPOE #845, life member of the Winona Community Hospital Association, member of the Winona State College Alumni Society, and charter member of the Natioanl World War II D-Day Museum.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda of Red Wing; children, Debra (Wayne) Eppen of Red Wing, Stacy (Dan) Moore of Farmington, MN, and Mark (Debbie) Ottoson of Lula, GA; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Edlin.

Memorial Service will be 6 p.m., beginning with a Legion Prayer service, on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Rev. Carmen Edwards officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials preferred to the Izaak Walton League.
