Richard G. Lyon

Richard Gregory Lyon, 71, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Red Wing. He was born on August 28, 1944, in St. Paul, to Fendall and Jane (Miller) Lyon. He graduated from McLean High School in Virginia and attended Lynchburg College receiving an undergraduate degree in Political Science. In 1968 he married Judy Kline and together they had three sons. They lived in Boulder, Colorado; San Diego, California and in 1981 they moved to Minnesota where they resided in Minnetonka. He began his career as a software engineer starting out as an intern at the CIA. He then worked for Data Storage Corporation in Colorado and he later became an engineering consultant, working for various companies. In 2001 he retired and moved to Red Wing, where he met the love of his life, Mary Ann "Bunny" Petersen. He was a member of United Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher; Red Wing Kiwanis Club, where he chaired the Flower Basket program; Red Wing Elks BPOE #845 and member and former chair of the AOPA and he always enjoyed meeting with his Pottery Place coffee group. He was an active consultant with the SCORE program and volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Sheldon Theater and for the Red Wing Area Seniors parking cars at the Red Wing clinic and he also assisted seniors with their tax returns. Rich loved music and played the upright bass, guitar and banjo; he was an avid reader, a wonderful cook and he enjoyed fly fishing.

Survivors include the love of his life, Bunny Petersen of Red Wing; three sons, Eric Lyon and Chris Lyon both of Portland, OR and Drew Lyon of Mankato; his mother, Jane Lyon of Fairfax, VA.; two brothers, Tom (Kathy) Lyon of Navarre, FL and Pete (Gail) Lyon of Fairfax, VA.; nieces and nephews, Garrett, Michael, Julia, Gregory and Michelle; Bunny's daughters, Desiree (Michael) Manning of Minneapolis and Sharee (Todd) Huus of Elk River and Bunny's granddaughter, Chantal Huus. He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2015, at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept 5, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the Kiwanis Flower Basket Fund.
