Richard "Rick" Avery Horen, 57, of Hager City, died peacefully, Saturday, December 5, 2009, surrounded by his children, at the VA Medical Center. He was born February 1, 1952 in Rapid City, South Dakota and his family moved to Red Wing when he was 13. After high school, he enlisted in the US Army, served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart. Following his time in the service, he married Margo Anderson and they lived in Red Wing. They later divorced. He had worked at Lee Line Bus Company, St. Paul Post Office and Knudsen Trucking Company. He had also been a bartender at the American Legion in Red Wing and Mr. Sippi's in Hager City. Rick enjoyed fishing, spending time on the river and doing mechanical work on cars, boats and motorcycles. He was a talker and loved socializing with people; he was a voracious reader and was an avid motorcyclist. He had been a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Leo C. Peterson American Legion #45 and the Burnson Lillyblad VFW #1218.

Rick is survived by 3 children, Jennifer Maren and Elizabeth Horen both of St. Paul and Patrick (Alysia Albarado) Horen of Red Wing; 2 granddaughters, Afton and Caileigh; 3 brothers, Howard (Mary Pat) Horen of Lake City, Charles (Carol) Horen of Colorado and George (Naomi) Horen of Texas and his close friends, Bruce Nehring and Pat Kernan of Hager City. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, assembly area 4. A celebration of Rick's life will be held following the burial at 1 p.m. at the Leo C. Peterson American Legion.
