Richard W. Hickey

January 20, 1931 — December 20, 2018

Richard W. Hickey, age 87, of Pine Island died on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Pine Haven Care Center from complications related to Parkinson's disease and from injuries received in a fall near his residence. The memorial service will be Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island with Pastor Marie Anderson officiating. Burial with Military honors by the Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184 will be in Pine Island Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and on Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Richard William Hickey was born on January 20, 1931 on the family farm in Milton Township, Dodge County, MN to William and Anna (Feil) Hickey. Richard attended country school near Douglas. On January 11, 1952 he entered the United States Marine Corps. Richard served during the Korean Conflict as a MP before being honorably discharged on January 10, 1954. Richard married Gail A. Dreyer on September 9, 1955. They made their home in Pine Island and Richard worked for Minnesota Cheese Producers and Land-O-Lakes for forty years. After he retired, Richard worked for the Mahn Family Funeral Home from January of 2000 until January 20, 2013.
Richard enjoyed being outdoors, whether tinkering on the farm, fishing, gardening or playing horseshoes. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling and in his younger days playing baseball and softball. In his later years he enjoyed traveling and taking bus trips.
Richard was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church and Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184.
Richard is survived by his wife, Gail; son, Paul (Barb) Hickey of Freeport, IL; daughter, Kathleen (Michael) Shaw of Rochester; grandchildren, Ryan Hickey, Courtney Hickey, Jacob Gilles and Emily Gilles; step grandchildren, Ben Rayhorn, Brigitte Rayhorn and Brittney (Randy) Gerstner; step great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Lennon Gerstner.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dale, Donald and Milo Hickey.
Memorials are suggested to Pine Haven Care Center or American Legion Post #184.
