Henderson, Richard F. (Dick)

age 81, passed away in his Red Wing home surrounded by family on June 4, 2010. Visitation will be held in Red Wing at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 8 from 5:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. with a brief service at 5:30. The memorial service will be held at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis on Wednesday, June 9 at 11:00 a.m. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Eva and Angus Henderson. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Muriel; his children, Ellen Henderson, Sandra Penning (Rick), Mark Henderson (Julie); and his grandchildren, Andrew and Christopher Penning and Joseph and Emily Henderson; and sister, Jean Johnson (Bill).

Born on October 16th, 1928, Dick graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis and from the University of Minnesota, where he earned both the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Hospital Administration degrees. While in college, he joined the Naval ROTC program. At the U of M, Dick was active in the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, where he began many lifelong friendships. In 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Muriel Jacobson, and they had three children together, Sandra, Mark and Ellen. He served two years of active duty with the US Navy during the Korean conflict on the attack transport USS Monrovia, where he served as Disbursing Officer and Assistant Supply Officer. He achieved the rank of Lt. Commander in the Navy Reserve by the time of his retirement from the service in 1976. He began a career in business working with Dayton's Department Stores and Texaco Inc. His career in hospital and health care administration spanned executive positions in the Twin Cities, Des Moines, Dallas and Kansas City. His early years of retirement took him to the golf resort community of Fairfield Bay in Arkansas. Ultimately, in order to be nearer to their family, he and Muriel settled in Red Wing in 2000. Always ready for new challenges, he worked part-time at the Red Wing Menards store as a designer for kitchens and baths until the onset of his recent illness last fall. Dick loved playing golf and played as often as possible right up through the 2009 fall season. Because of deep family roots here, Dick loved the City of Red Wing. He was an enthusiastic member of the Red Wing Planning Commission, advocating for preservation of the riverfront. Dick's deepest devotion was reflected in his dedication to his family. He was very invested in the activities and lives of his three children and his four grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial gifts be designated for cancer research at Mayo Clinic, St. Paul's Lutheran Church or charity of donor's choice.
