Richard Lee Gustafson, 85, of Red Wing, died on Friday, November 1, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Red Wing. He was born April 6, 1928, to Edward and Frances (Larson) Gustafson. He graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1945 and went on to attend the University of Minnesota Agricultural School. On July 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mildred Nygaard, and they made their home in Red Wing. Dick held various jobs throughout his life; he worked for a professional house painter, drove a milk truck, was a salesman at Sears and drove school bus for Lee Lines, but his favorite job of all was with the City of Red Wing, where he tended to Colvill Park, retiring in 1993. Mildred died June 6, 1994. After Mildred's passing, he took up golfing, and it became one of his favorite pastimes. He was also involved with the Red Wing Senior Center, where he volunteered as a driver and parking attendant and also enjoyed playing cards at the center. In his younger years, he was a talented furniture maker, having made very fine furniture pieces. He also enjoyed reading and, most of all, spending time with his family.
He is survived by 3 children: Steven (Monica Deignan) Gustafson of Madison, Wisconsin, Barbara (David) Ives of Rhinebeck, New York and Nancy (Jay) McCleary of Red Wing; 4 grandchildren: Meaghan (Jake Robertson) Gustafson, Katie (Shane Beranek) Gustafson and Taylor and Kelsey Ives; 3 great-grandchildren: Erykah, Amayah and Alexander; 4 siblings: Donald Gustafson of Florida, JoAnne Johnson of Cannon Falls, Sharyn (Sterling) Sorenson of Red Wing and Carol (Conrad) Lindell of Cannon Falls; sister-in-law, Joy Nygaard of Red Wing and a brother-in-law, Richard Cooper of Oronoco.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a sister, Beverly Cooper.
