Richard D. Gilles

Richard David Gilles, 80, of Red Wing, died Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Lake City Care Center. He was born August 22, 1938 in Plum City, Wisconsin to Leonard and Elvira (Johnson) Gilles. He later moved to Red Wing where he worked at the Mobil 66 Station and the Red Wing Shoe Company. He worked for nearly 40 years at the shoe, retiring in 1990. He married JoAnn Lundberg and the couple raised three children. They later divorced. Richard enjoyed horseback riding and was a founding member of the Jesse James Ride, a horseback ride from Hay Creek to Northfield for Jesse James Days. He was also a member of the Hay Creek Valley Saddle Club. He also enjoyed racing and raced stock cars, snowmobiles and motorcycles. He was a lifelong member of the American Motorcycle Association, the Indian Head Cycle Club and the Red Men Club. In his younger years he liked to play the guitar and go camping and he has always enjoyed a good game of horseshoes.
Richard is survived by his children, Steven (Rene) Gilles of Red Wing, Kellee (Jim) Kreye of Red Wing and Tony (Jodi Chaves) Gilles of Red Wing; five grandchildren, Angie (Dustin) Schulenberg, Ben Gilles, Cole (Hannah) Gilles, Kasci (Christa) Gilles and Kaylee Gilles; five great grandchildren, Riely Kreye, Taylor and Alex Schulenberg, Lilyanna and Saphira Gilles; four siblings, Cal (Mae) Gilles, Barbara Houge, Kenny Gilles and Margaret (Jerry) Schmitz; as well as many other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Nikki Kreye; brother Ed Gilles and his parents.

Visitation will be 3-6p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2018 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson Mahn Chapel, Red Wing. A short prayer service will take place at 6 p.m. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
