Richard Fredrick Dodge, 88, of Red Wing, died Friday, February 14, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born June 6, 1925 in Trimbelle Township to Fred and Edna (Lansing) Dodge. He attended Prescott high school and immediately following his graduation, joined the Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Columbia during WWII in the Pacific Theater. After being honorably discharged in 1946 he returned to Red Wing where he began working at Nash Garage. On April 25, 1950 he married C. Muriel Miller in Clayfield Catholic Church and the couple made their home in Red Wing. Together they had four children. He worked various jobs in the area before settling in with Central Research Laboratories where he worked for more than 30 years. Dick was a member of the Church of St. Joseph, the Burnson-Lillyblad VFW Post #1218, and the Leo C. Peterson, American Legion, Post #54. He also remained active with his shipmates of the U.S.S. Columbia until the time of his passing. He enjoyed woodcarving, playing golf, boating, playing euchre and dancing with his wife. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Muriel; children, Kevin (Nancy) of Red Wing, Margo (Chirs) Torgerson of Huntsville, Alabama, Paula Dodge of McAllen, Texas and Anita (John) Frawley of San Francisco; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; sisters Dorthea Tomhave of Red Wing and Marilyn Grosse of Wacouta; brother, Donald "Red" Dodge of Rapid City, many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Robert Meyer presiding. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Leo C. Peterson, American Legion, Post #54. A visitation will be 4 - 7, Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Red Wing Hospice or the Church of St. Joseph.
