Richard Julius Carlson, age 83 of Red Wing, died on Friday, November 21, 2008 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park.

Richard was born on August 18, 1925 in Red Wing to Adolph and Ellen (Kaarup) Carlson. He grew up in Red Wing and attended Red Wing Central High School. Cpl. Richard Carlson was with the United States Marine Corps for nearly three years (1943â€â₝1946), 20 months of which were spent in the Pacific during World War II. He took part in the Iwo Jima campaign and the occupation of Japan, for which he was awarded the American theater ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with one star, the Presidential Unit Citation for the Iwo Jima campaign with the 5th Division, and the Victory medal, before being Honorably Discharged in 1946.

Richard returned to Red Wing and was united in marriage to Shirley Anne Hodge on September 17, 1948. They recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Richard worked at Red Wing Potteries before becoming an auto mechanic and worked at McCoy-Curran Garage on Main Street for many years in addition to other auto shops. For 10 years, he was employed as a custodian at the Goodhue County Courthouse, retiring in 1990. Richard enjoyed camping, pitching horseshoes, listening to country-western and big band music, collecting Edsel die-cast cars, vacationing in Florida, and spending time with his family. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Marine Corps League, and was a former member of the VFW.

Richard is survived by wife Shirley of Red Wing; four children Bonnie (Bruce) Johnson of Red Wing, Terry Carlson of Highland Mills, NY, JoEllen (Dave) Haustein of Red Wing, and David Carlson of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren Jennifer Dullum, Brandon (Stacey) Klahn, and Nathan Haustein; three great-grandchildren Stacy Dullum, Traci Dullum, and Alivia Klahn; sisters-in-law Dottie Carlson, Jackie (Bruce) McLean and Ann (Manny) Schreiber; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, brother Harold "Hal" Carlson, and a favorite nephew, Michael McLean, preceded him in death.

Memorials are preferred to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Minnesota Chapter, 1611 West County Road B, Suite 221, St. Paul, MN 55113.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing with Father Charles Uhlik officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bruce Johnson, Dave Haustein, Brandon Klahn, and Nathan Haustein. Honorary Pallbearer will be Jennifer Dullum. Visitation for Richard will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service.
