Reuben V. Scharpen age 91 of Goodhue died unexpectedly on Friday, December 21, 2007. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, December 27, 2007 at 1:30 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church ? Minneola in rural Zumbrota with Reverend Randall Kuznicki officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Goodhue. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, December 26, 2007 from 4:00 ? 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home ? Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Reuben Victor Scharpen was born on April 25, 1916 in Goodhue Township, Goodhue County, MN to Detleff and Elizabeth (nee Damann) Scharpen. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He started farming with his mother and on September 5, 1941 he married Rosella C. Luhman at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue. They farmed in the Goodhue area until retiring in the late 1970's. They continued to live on the farm and Reuben enjoyed helped his son farm. Rosella died on September 5, 1998. Reuben was a member and had served as a trustee at St. John's Lutheran Church ? Minneola. He served for many years on the Goodhue Creamery Board and was currently a member of the Goodhue Historical Society and the Goodhue County Historical Society. Reuben was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening, restoring tractors, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Reuben is survived by two daughters, Verna (Mike) Lifto of Maiden Rock, WI, and Colleen (Tom) Storandt of LaCrescent, three sons, Lyle (Barbara) Scharpen and Myron (Lois) Scharpen, both of Zumbrota and Willie (Nancy) Scharpen of Goodhue, thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Reuben was preceded in death by his wife, Rosella, son, Milo, an infant daughter, granddaughter, Karla Storandt, seven brothers, John, Clarence, Louis, Henry, Elmer, Walter and Ludwig Scharpen and five sisters, Margaret Heins, Anna Meyer, Emma Voth, Gertrude Muhlman and Marie Bremer. Casketbearers are David, Michael and Matthew Scharpen, Ross Crow, Kelly Stensland and Erica Storandt. Honorary bearers are Nathan Crow, Tracey Tracy, Christine Anderson, Kenneth Scharpen, Lori Byersdorfer, Samuel and Scott Scharpen. The family suggests memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church ? Minneola.
