Raymond Paul Zobel, 91, of Rochester, died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2013) at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester where he has resided for the past six years.
Born March 24, 1921 in New Ulm, MN, he was raised and graduated from high school there. Ray proudly served his country, first in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a Machinist Mate First Class, then serving with US Army National Guard in Korea as a Warrant Officer with the 7th Cavalry. He married Margery Tomasetti on Dec. 29, 1945 in Chicago, IL. They have been married for 67 years. After his discharge from the National Guard the couple moved to Rochester where Ray was employed by Utility Sales and Engineering for 30 years. After retirement Ray combined business with pleasure by working several years at Eastwood Golf Course. Ray was very active in Redeemer Lutheran Church serving as an Elder, Trustee, Usher, and Finance Committee member. His church community and his faith were a cornerstone of his life. He was a member of the William T. McCoy Post # 92 of the American Legion for over 50 years. Ray was a Boy Scout leader for several years. He was a master woodworker and carver, enjoyed photography, and had a passion for golf. He was a wonderful husband and a loving father. He thoroughly enjoyed his years as a grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Marge, his daughter, Linda (Jim) Lynn of Galena, IL; his son, Larry (Vicki) of Bloomington, MN; five grandchildren, Jason (Alison) Lynn, Shauna (Dylan) Fuller, Adam (Krista) Zobel, Derek (Erin) Zobel , and Amanda Zobel, two great granddaughters, and five great grandsons. His parents preceded him in death.
Ray's family wishes to thank the compassionate caregivers at Sunrise Cottages. They are extra special people who made a huge difference in all our lives. Thank you also to Mayo Clinic Hospice for making the final days easier for Ray. We also can't forget Dr. Greg Hanson for the many years of care.
