Ray L. Cronk

Raymond LeRoy Cronk, 76, of Red Wing died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Ray was born on March 9, 1940 to Joseph and Bernice (Montbriand) Cronk in Bemidji. He attended Bemidji High School where he was a three sport athlete participating in basketball, track and baseball. In basketball, he was a three year starter and played in three state tournaments. He was a member of the All-Tournament Team in 1957 and 1958 and scored over 1400 points in his career. Ray went on to play for the Minnesota Gophers in 1959 averaging 14 points per game and lead the Gophers in rebounds from 1960-62. He was the MVP in 1962. Ray was drafted by the New York Knicks in 1964 and played with the Minnesota Muskies in 1968.
After graduating from college, Ray worked in Minneapolis in recreation and at various insurance companies before moving to Red Wing in 1984 with Citizens Security Insurance Company. He retired as a claims adjuster with Heritage Claims. Ray loved to spend time hunting and fishing in Bemidji with his friends, kids and grandchildren. He was an avid reader and enjoyed following Minnesota sports teams. Ray was an all-around great athlete and enjoyed playing tennis and softball in his younger years.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Jody; his children, Tim (Sharon) Cronk, Bob (Karen) Cronk, Patti (Lindsey) Eggert, and Blair (Rodney) Sharp; grandchildren Liz, Jacob, Joe, James, Eric, Katrina, Maddie, Brennan, Alicia and Kyus; and one brother Bob (Joey) Montbriand. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Darlene, Diane, and Lynne; and his friend, Dale.
Memorial service will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing with Father Patrick Casey officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
