Ralph F. Schrimpf

September 7, 1924 — October 2, 2015

Ralph Frederick Schrimpf, 91 of Lake City, passed away October 2, 2015 at his home. He and his twin brother, Robert were born on September 7, 1924 to Otto and Isabel (Hoyer) Schrimpf in Red Wing. His early years were spent on farms in and around Red Wing. In 1944 he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he served for two years. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater and would gladly share his wartime experiences with anyone who would listen for the next 70 years. He was a hard working dairy farmer for nearly 50 years. He also served as the treasurer for St. John's Lutheran School where he signed checks for the primary school teacher, Lois Schutz and in 1958 they were married in Baraboo, Wisc. They were blessed with two sons and a daughter, who was stillborn. His children and grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy. For someone who had only an 8th grade education he never ceased to marvel at his sons becoming teachers and his grandchildren attending the highest colleges in the country. In 1990 he and Lois moved into their dream home in the "Wurst" addition in Goodhue County. His interests were his faith, his children (and wife) and farming. He also loved reading, bowling, needlework, playing cards, puzzles, cutting wood and his home. People will remember Ralph for his wit, his dry sense of humor and being a gentle soul. All his caregivers over the last years truly loved him and his family is very grateful for that.
Ralph is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois; sons, Ron (Kathy) Schrimpf, a professor at Vanderbilt University and Jim (Becky) Schrimpf a photographer and teacher; grandchildren, Matt (Harvard University) and his wife Carmen, Natalie (Dartmouth College and Yale University), Ryan (Arizona State University and Summit Law School) and Danny (athlete and scholar at Patagonia High School); sisters-in-law, Delores Schrimpf of Lake City, Lois Schrimpf of Goodhue, Wanda McArthur and Eunice McCoy , both of Baraboo; many nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jane; twin brother, Robert and brothers, Herb, Ed and August and one sister, Mae Steffenhagen.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2015 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Lake City. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 2015 and one hour prior, both at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Mission Fund.
