Ralph Pershing McGowan

Funeral services for Ralph McGowan will be held Wednesday January 14th at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Oronoco, with the Reverend Paul Baldauf officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Pine Island American Legion, will follow at Pine Island Cemetery. Mr. McGowan, 90, of Rochester, died Saturday January 10, 2009 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.

Ralph Pershing McGowan was born March 24, 1918 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. He moved, with his family, to the Pine Island area as a child. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. On July 31, 1952, in Pine Island, he married Joan Steege. The couple moved to Oronoco in 1956. He worked on various farms in the area, and then became employed at the Minnesota Cheese Producers Association in Pine Island. He then worked as a welder at Crenlo in Rochester, retiring in 1983. The McGowans moved to Rochester in 2005. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with his granddaughter. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oronoco, and the Pine Island American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Joan McGowan, of Rochester; a son, Dan (Ruth) McGowan of Oronoco; a granddaughter, Ashley McGowan of Oronoco; three brothers, Harold (Ella Mae) McGowan of Tacoma, Washington, Joseph (Joan) McGowan of Fox Lake, Wisconsin, and Donald McGowan of Caledonia, Minnesota; a sister, Patricia Allen of Pine Island; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers, and three sisters.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home � Mahler Chapel in Pine Island. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
