Phillip F. Fitterer of Red Wing, MN passed away on Tuesday, July 7th at the age of 82. After a courageous battle with cancer and other underlying health issues, he died peacefully within his home.
Phil was born on March 30th, 1938 in Mankato, MN to Leo and Esther Fitterer. He had two brothers (Lewis and Joe) and two sisters (Kay and Evie).
In 1956 Phil joined the United States Marine Corps and not long after, married his beloved wife Bonnie Fitterer (Bigelow) in Beaumont, TX and then settled in Le Sueur, MN into their first home. Through their 62 years of marriage they raised two wonderful children, Damian and Alison, and were the grandparents to seven beautiful grandchildren.
Phil worked at IBM for 25 years and then moved on to sell Farmers Insurance, as well as owned two mobile home parks in both Red Wing and Lake City, MN. He and his wife Bonnie traveled often, from South Africa and Greece to snowmobiling through Yellowstone National Park, enjoying their houseboat on the Mississippi River, and wintering in Arizona for over 25 years.
As an avid motorcyclist, Phil owned three motorcycles at the time of his death. He also enjoyed a morning swim at the local pool, his favorite snack of popcorn, and a hot cup of black coffee any time of the day. His family and friends will miss his jokes, humor, and storytelling the most.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leo and Esther Fitterer, sister Kay Fitterer, brother and sister-in-law Lewis and Carol Fitterer.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie Fitterer, son and daughter-in-law Damian and Laura Fitterer, daughter Alison Anderson, grandson and wife Kegan and Stefani Kaul, grandson Sam Fitterer, granddaughters Lanny Fitterer, Cora Fitterer, Lily Fitterer, Molly Fitterer, and Meg Fitterer, brother-in-law Phil Hodapp, sister and brother-in-law Evie and Maurie Thelemann, brother and sister-in-law Joe and Kay Fitterer.
Memorial service will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.
