Obituary: Philip R. Smith Funeral services for Philip R. Smith will be on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at 2PM at the Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rochester with Reverend Jon Bitter officiating. Music will be provided by Steve Rutschow, organist, with the congregation singing. Casketbearers will be James Smith, Jason Smith, Jacob Sundblad, Tom Henderson, Orlin Friedrich and David Friedrich. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Memorials are preferred to Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran School or the American Heart Association. Philip Robert Smith, age 92, of Zumbrota, formerly Rochester, died on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Pine Haven Care Center. He was born on August 27, 1914 in Lakota County, North Dakota to Robert and Louise (Emholtz) Smith. He attended school and graduated from West Concord High School. Phil attended Dunwoody Technical College in Minneapolis. On June 25, 1938 he married Gladys Friedrich in Goodhue County, MN. His early years were spent in Zumbrota farming, working as an auto technician and building houses and barns. He worked 23 years for the Rochester School District as head of maintenance and as a woodworking instructor. He was a founding member of the Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rochester and he enjoyed woodworking, tours, fishing and making many craft items for his family. His doll houses were especially treasured. Phil is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Zumbrota, MN; one son, Gary (Carol) Smith, of Byron, MN; two daughters: Janet (Jerry) Fricke, of St. Michael, MN and Marie (Bruce) Ellingson, of Union, KY; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Henderson, of Wanamingo, MN. His parents and one sister, Elizabeth Henderson, preceded him in death. Visitation will be Saturday, October 21, 2006, from 5-8PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home ? Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday.
