Philip R. Deraas age 90 of rural Wanamingo passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at his home. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Wanamingo Lutheran Church with Pastor Clark Cary officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is Monday from 4:00 �'¢?" 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home �'¢?" Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Philip Ruben Deraas was born on May 16, 1920 in rural Zumbrota to Edwin and Helen (nee Froyum) Deraas. He was baptized and confirmed at Lands Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. While in grade school his family moved to rural Wanamingo. He attended country school in Cherry Grove Township and grades seven and eight in Wanamingo. On August 23, 1943 he married Pauline Rasmusson at her parent�'¢?TMs farm and they joined Wanamingo Lutheran Church where Philip was an active member, serving in leadership roles, helping with building projects, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. Philip was also involved with the Cherry Grove Township Board where he served as an election judge and was an active member of the Sons of Norway Kristiana Lodge in Rochester and later the Viking Lodge in Kenyon. Philip visited Norway four times and could speak Norwegian. He loved farming, carpentry, restoring antique vehicles, fishing and family life. In his later years he enjoyed farm shows, developed a saw mill and became a master wood carver. Philip taught woodcarving to many and also was a vendor of Norwegian carvings at community events. Philip was respected as honest, fair and hardworking by friends and family. He was a man of strong body, mind and soul... He will be truly missed. Philip is survived by his daughter, Judy (Jim) Davis of Wanamingo; special friend, Mary Ann Henry of West Concord; grandsons, Patrick Davis of LaCrescent and Paul (Rachael) Deraas of Apple Valley; granddaughters, Sara (Loren) Bauer of Eyota and Carri Ann (David) Woog of Savage; seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Shari Deraas of Zumbrota; brother, Rolf Deraas of Sauk Rapids; sister, Edith (Bud) Kyllo of Wanamingo; brother-in-law, Louis (Gaylene) Rasmusson of Sebeka and seventeen nieces and nephews. Philip was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline; sons, Philip E. Deraas and Steven R. Deraas; an infant daughter and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Memorials are preferred to Wanamingo Lutheran Church Building Fund or Wanamingo Lutheran Church Cemetery.
