Paul Elliot Swanson, 88, of Red Wing, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, October 30, 2014. Paul was born on October 29, 1926, in Chicago to Otto and Lillie (Wahlstrom) Swanson. He attended Southwest High School in Minneapolis and then went into the Navy at age 17. Paul Married Patricia Harmon on June 19, 1954 in Minneapolis. He started his career working in Minneapolis at Armour and Company. A job at Behrens Auto Supply brought the family to Red Wing in 1970.
Paul was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church where he served as treasurer for over 30 years. He also volunteered for many years at the Red Wing Food Shelf. He played an active role with the Mississippi Shuffle and was an Honorary Chairperson. He was also honored as WCCO's Good Neighbor in 1993 and as the Kiwanis Red Wing Neighbor of the Year in 1995. He was a member of the Y's Men's Club and helped construct the YMCA's Camp Pepin and also sold Christmas trees every year. He made a profound impact on the lives of his family and friends and the community. He enjoyed watching all sports on T.V., golfing, bowling, playing card games, putting puzzles together and he loved spending time with his family.
Paul is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Nancy (Bruce) Paasch of Red Wing; two sons, Steve (Charlie) Swanson of Diamond Bluff, Wisc. and Roger Swanson of Inver Grove Heights; his six grandchildren, Stacy (Bill) Sanford, Terry Swanson, Chris Paasch, Karrie (Jeff) Danielson, Brian Swanson and Nick Swanson; his six great grandchildren, Rylie, Payton, Brayden, Isiah, Edyn and Reese; and one brother, Roy Swanson of Eagan, Minn. He was preceded in death by his infant son, William; brother, Al Swanson; sister, Fern Strassburg and his parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery with military honors provided by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, Post 54. Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m., Monday, November 3, 2014 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred to Red Wing Hospice or to the church.
