Paul Eugene Gardner

September 23, 1923 — July 10, 2019

Paul Gardner passed away peacefully on July 10, 2019. Paul was 95 years of age.

Born the fourth eldest child to Walter and Esther Gardner, Paul grew up in the area around Chatfield and Fountain. In a family that grew to include 11 siblings, Paul learned the importance of responsibility and hard work at an early age. He greatly enjoyed sharing his many stories of rural living, the joys and burdens of working on a farm "back in the good old days", and, of course, he enjoyed sharing humorous anecdotes about his brothers and sisters.

On September 15, 1945, he married his sweetheart, Lois (Rockvam). Paul relished telling the story of how he and Lois were married at the same farm site where he had been born and, 22 years later, where she and her family then lived. With a loving smile, Paul would recall that their outdoor wedding that day was "quite the event."

Paul served his country with pride as a Sgt in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Regensburg, Germany, and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal for his service.

Following his return from Germany, Paul and Lois and their young family lived for a time in Two Harbors, Minnesota, where he worked as a carpenter. They eventually returned to southeastern Minnesota and settled outside of Eyota where he worked for 30 years as a farm hand for the Whitcomb families. After retiring, he and Lois made Rochester their home.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of nearly 64 years, a daughter Linda and a son Larry. He was also preceded in death by brothers Russell, Donald, Patrick, Charles, John, and Thomas, and sisters Marjorie, Doris, and Rosemary.

He is survived by his daughter Shari and his son David, two grandchildren Sabreana and Zebadiah, and four great-grandchildren Braxton, Brantley, Luke, and Emma. He is also survived by two brothers Victor (Jane), and Joseph (Sharon).

Paul will be missed for his sense of humor, his storytelling, his eagerness to help others whenever needed and, of course, for his constant love and support for family and friends.

The celebration of life service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday July 18th at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel, with the Rev. Carol Shaffer, Seasons Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. There will be a private burial at a future date.

Online tributes are being welcomed and may be written at mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com .
