OBITUARY: Palmer Berg

Funeral service for Palmer G. Berg will be at 2PM on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at
Lands Lutheran Church, 16640 Highway 60 Blvd., Zumbrota with Reverend David Krinke officiating. Music will be provided by Karen Heimer, organist, and Connie Rude, soloist. Burial will follow in Lands Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association or to the donor's choice.

Palmer, age 84, of Pine Island died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester where he had resided for the past year. He was born Palmer Gilman Berg on February 28, 1924 in Roscoe Township, Goodhue County to Oscar and Gitta (Shelstad) Berg. He attended country school and on August 27, 1944 married Betty J. Allen in Zumbrota. Following their marriage, the couple farmed, first on the family farm, until he bought the Shelstad farm in 1951. They were there for 23 years and then purchased the John Berg farm. Palmer retired at the age of 75 and the couple moved into Pine Island. He was an active member of Lands Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for 35 years. Palmer was also active in 4-H and Lutheran Brotherhood. He enjoyed all phases of farming especially milking cows.
Palmer is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty, of Pine Island; three sons: Ronald (Brenda), of Fitzwilliam, NH, Glenn (Marlene), of Rochester and Paul (Lisa), of Kenyon; three daughters: Carol (Ken) Peterman, of Pine Island, Marlys Rucker, of Inver Grove Heights and JoEllen (Brett) Miller, of Byron; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; two great step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Doris Berg and Carol Moreland, both of Pine Island. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Gitta, one brother, Gorman, and two sisters: Berdella Romo and Glenda Holmes.

Visitation will be from 5-8PM on Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home � Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
