Orie Elmer Windhorst

June 11, 1939 — January 2, 2013

Orie Elmer Windhorst, 73 of Lake City, left this earth for his heavenly home to receive his crown of glory on January 2, 2013. He died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by his family. Orie was a faithful man and believed in God with all his heart. He knew he was loved by God and knew with all certainty he would enter his heavenly home.
He was born to Elmer and Eleanor Windhorst on June 11, 1939, and grew up on the family farm near Oak Center. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Lake City in 1957 and joined the National Guard.
He married Jane Bartels on June 18, 1960, at Elma, Iowa, and they enjoyed 52 wonderful years together. They enjoyed many things together such as motorcycling, dancing, and playing cards, and with their family such as vacations "up north", snowmobiling, boating, and water skiing on the Mississippi. Together they travelled throughout the United States and especially enjoyed their trips to Arizona every spring and to New York to visit and vacation with their "adopted" New York family
Orie was a carpenter for a couple of years prior to joining IBM where he won many awards through the IBM Achievement Award Program until his retirement in 1992. He then went to work at Pepin Heights Orchard and later at Wild Wings in Lake City before starting his own shrub trimming business. He loved fixing things and was most proud of being a carpenter and building his last two homes and creating things from wood.
Orie served on many church boards and committees (church council, board of elders, Sunday School superintendent, and special ministries), sang in the church choir, and was a Township Supervisor for many years while living in Oak Center.
He was a wonderful husband, loving father, and a beloved "Papa" to his grandchildren, and will always be remembered for his smile, kind and patient ways, and his sense of humor. We will miss him dearly.
Orie is survived by his wife, Jane, of Lake City; three daughters, Jeanine (Randy) Hinck of Lake City, Julie (Jeff) Green of Rochester, and Deann (Perry Knudsen) Windhorst of Lake City; his cherished grandchildren, Blaine, Jordana, Ashley, and Tanner; two brothers, Kenneth (Marilyn) Windhorst of Geneva, and Henry Windhorst of Zumbro Falls; two sisters, Marian (John) Schueller of Aitkin, and Sandra Windhorst of St. Louis Park; brother and sister-in-laws, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
