Oretta Nelson

March 10, 1924 — August 3, 2012

Oretta Jeanette Nelson, 88, Red Wing, died Friday, August 3, 2012, at her home. She was born March 10, 1924 in Goodhue County, the daughter of Jens and Olava (Finne) Erie. She attended schools in Vasa. She married Virgil Nelson on July 7, 1945 and they lived in Vasa where they farmed and where she raised chickens, becoming known as the Egg Lady. She worked for many years at the Corner Café. Virgil died in 1990. She moved to Red Wing and lived at Maple Hills and Jordan Tower I before moving into Potter Ridge in January, 2011. She was a member of Vasa Lutheran Church and a member of Pocahontas for over 50 years. She enjoyed going to casinos, fishing, gardening, and loved cooking, baking and canning jams and jellies.

Survivors include two children: Randy Nelson of Red Wing and Kaylee Lampman of Red Wing; one sister, Ione Irvin of Red Wing; two brothers, Lewis and Sanford Erie, both of Red Wing; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Larry Nelson; three sisters, Mayme Martinson, Bobbie McCusker and Sylvia Flom; four brothers, Jim, Joel, Ken and Ray Erie.

Funeral service will 2 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Vasa Lutheran Church with Reverend Kristi Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Condolences may be left at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
