Norman Ray Hennings was born December 15, 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Norman G. and Jessie K. (nee Hubbard) Hennings. Growing up in St. Paul, he was a member of the boys' choir at St. John's Episcopal Church and enjoyed playing baseball with his friends. He also had many wonderful memories of times spent with his family visiting the Skones at their farm in Cushing, Wisconsin, and vacationing and fishing at the Whitefish chain of lakes.
He graduated from Central High School in St. Paul, and attended Macalester College. He joined the United States Navy in 1942, serving as a Naval Aviator and flight instructor during World War II. While stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas he met the love of his life, Lorean "Lonnie" Justice. They were married on February 10, 1945. After he was honorably discharged, they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, and later made their home in Zumbrota, Minnesota, where he lived until 2001. He then moved to Red Wing, Minnesota.
He served on the Minnesota State Patrol for 25 years before retiring, and later worked on the Zumbrota Police Force part time. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, spending time at the lake, socializing, and taking his beloved dogs for rides in his car. He had great love and pride for his grandchildren, and cherished every moment he spent with them. He was respected and loved by family and his many friends.
He was a member of United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, cub master, life member of the VFW, and was a Mason at the Oriental Lodge No. 34 in Cannon Falls, Minnesota.
Norman is survived by one son, Jeff (Janelle) Hennings of Olympia, Washington; two daughters, Jan Johnson of South Haven, Minnesota, and Gayle (Ben) Boldt of Red Wing; three grandchildren, Jessie Lorean Boldt, Sumner Justice Boldt, and Benjamin Wesley Boldt.
