Neal Gerald Larson, 90, of Red Wing, died Monday, March 14, 2016, at the St. Crispin Living Community-Seminary Home. He was born June 14, 1925, in Red Wing, to Louis and Mae (Anderson) Larson and graduated from Red Wing Central High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Navy in September of 1943 and served until he was honorably discharged in May of 1946. On January 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty Johnson and they made their home in Red Wing. Neal began his career at the Red Wing Training School in 1948, and worked there until his retirement in 1986. Neal and Betty built a home in Amery, Wisconsin, where for many years they enjoyed their summers fishing on the Apple River. During that time, they also wintered in Apache Junction, Arizona. In 2011, they returned to Red Wing. Betty died on May 10, 2015. Neal was an avid hunter and fisherman but his main enjoyment was playing the saxophone with the band, The Keynotes, for many years. Neal was also a volunteer firefighter in Red Wing.
He is survived by his children, Jeff (Missy) Larson of Red Wing, Jane (Ron) Belshan of Glenville, MN, Jody (Lee) Diercks of Bradenton, FL and Jack (Jayne) Larson of Red Wing; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry "Sonny" Larson; a son, Jerry Larson; a sister, Elsie Mae Lersch and his wife, Betty.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Chaplin Debby Bradley officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be for one hour prior the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
