Nancy Alms, 76, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems – St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester. She was born September 28, 1946 in Red Wing, to Rolland and Fern (Spilman) Alms.
She attended Red Wing Schools, graduating from Red Wing Central High School, class of 1964. She graduated from the Minneapolis Business College in 1965, after which, she worked in Minneapolis and Red Wing before moving to California in 1968.
While living in Long Beach, California she was employed as an executive in the wholesale lumber industry on the West Coast for 25 years. She enjoyed living and working in an area that allowed her to experience all the West Coast had to offer.
In her next career she worked for So. California Edison at the San Onofre Nuclear generating station for 10 years. She was an active volunteer for a wide variety of company events. Nancy was instrumental in starting the Cancer Society Relay for Life and was chairman for several years.
Even though she transplanted to the West Coast she was a diehard Minnesota Vikings fan. Whenever she was asked where she was from, her reply wasn’t just “Minnesota.” It was “RED WING, MINNESOTA!”
She enjoyed camping and outdoor field trips. She enjoyed travel, both domestic and abroad, keeping in contact with friends made in England and Germany.
She retired home to Red Wing for good in 2019, where between Red Wing, Lake City and California she had a wonderful group of friends she socialized and traveled with. Her event calendar was always full.
Even when living in California she subscribed to the local Red Wing newspaper and kept up with hometown things. She clipped articles of local interest and saved them as a touchstone with the town.
Even though a large part of her life was lived elsewhere, she always considered Red Wing as home, and everyone there as friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her son, John; grandson, Neli Fisher of California; brother, Doug (Sara Rayner); sister, Terry; nephews, Eric and Aaron Alms, all in Minnesota.
There will be a get together of friends and neighbors to say goodbye from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the Harbor Bar in Hager City, Wisconsin.
