Nam Ngov

Nam Ngov, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He had been a resident of Rochester for more than 33 years.
Nam was born in Battambang, Cambodia on May 1, 1930 to Cheng Kim Ngov and Soy Muoy Kor. One of six children, he became a business man at an early age. In 1957, he married Kim Chhay Taing and they have seven children, four boys and three girls.
Throughout life, Nam overcame numerous challenges. Nam has survived through the reign of the Khmer Rouge, where he lost his business and all material possessions, along with his wife, Kim Chhay Taing passing away. He was finally able to flee in 1979 with his children to one of Thailand's refugee camps, but they were deported back to Cambodia soon after. When Nam flee to Thailand for a second time, the Thai government accepted him and four of his children, however, he was separated from his eldest and youngest son along with second daughter. Nam and his family had to stay in the refugee camp for three years while awaiting sponsorship to the United States. Before they were sponsored by relatives, Nam and his family had to be deported from Thai refugee came again, but this time they were allowed to be relocated to the Philippines before he and his family were finally able to come to the United States in 1982. Eventually, Nam was able to reunite with his lost sons, but never able to find his lost daughter. While living in the United States, Nam supported his family through various odd jobs and caring for his numerous grandchildren.
Nam is survived by 3 sisters: Yeak Ouer Ou, Yeak Sieng Ou, Ing Wu; 6 children: Tieng (Richard), Eav (Sovanna), Hun Ung (Soyhour), Kong (Srun), Huy (Wendy), and Bill Sie (Toon); and thirteen grandchildren: Thai Heng, Brian, Eric, Maggie, Elizabeth, Alex, Brandon, Melody, Nicholas, Aria, Jasmine, Sopheap, Alena.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cheng Kim Ngov and mother, Soy Muoy Kor, his wife, Kim Chhay Taing and his older brother, Suy Hai Ou.
Buddhist's prayer will be held at 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and visitation will be held at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, 1624 37th Street NW, Rochester. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, Feb 6 at 9 a.m. Burial site is TBD.Online tributes are being welcomed and may be written at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com .
Nam left a legacy of love, resiliency, persistency, determination and the will to overcome obstacles and challenges of life.
