Monika Anna Gudrais, 96, of Red Wing and formerly of Rochester, died Friday, December 28, 2007, at her son's home in Red Wing, where she has resided for the past three years. She was born on November 7, 1911, in Daugavpils, Latvia to Stephan and Hedwig (Purvinskis) Bogdanovs. She attended schools in Latvia and in 1938 was married to Zigfrids Gudrais, Sr. In 1944 her family escaped Communism. From 1944 to 1950 they lived in various places in the countries of Czechoslovakia and Germany. In 1950 they moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota and in 1952 to Rochester where she worked 15 years for Waters Conley and then managed the Godtland Lodge and Sorensen Guest House. Zigfrids died in 1968. She also translated German, Polish, Latvian and Russian at the Mayo Clinic. She was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester and attended United Lutheran Church while living in Red Wing. She enjoyed baking rolls and her family remembers how she was a proud American; she easily adopted and loved this country.

Survivors include three children, Dagmara (Al) Melton of San Jose, California, Zigfrid (Lynette) Gudrais of Red Wing and Eric (Bev) Gudrais of Maple Grove; eight grandchildren, Keli, Eric and Brett Melton, Christopher and Elizabeth Gudrais and Jed, Greg and Nick Sanborn and ten great grandchildren. Besides her husband she is preceded in death by one sister and several brothers.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester with the Revs. James Mattson and Gary Benson officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Fairview Red Wing Hospice. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing.
