Milo Carl Wehking, of Waconia, MN, formerly of Lake City and Chaska, MN, passed away on March 9, 2020, at the age of 88. Milo was born at home on the family farm in rural Hector, MN on May 8, 1931, to Carl and Mamie Wehking. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in the countryside. Milo attended Litchfield High School where he was involved in wrestling and football, but loved playing baseball the most. He played on the high school team as well as being pitcher and right fielder on the Cosmos traveling town team.
Milo enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed at the Far East Headquarters in Tokyo as an Airman First Class. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and earned the Korean Service Medal, the UN Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return home he became a member of both the VFW and Disabled American Veterans.
After his service, Milo moved to Minneapolis to attend the Minnesota School of Business, graduating with an accounting degree in 1955. While there he met Margaret Kraemer. They were married on December 22, 1956, and the following year moved to Willmar, MN. With their growing family, Milo and Margaret moved to Victoria when Milo took a position as an Accounting Officer in the Carver County Family Services Department at the Court House in Chaska.
Milo was a farm boy at heart, so in 1964 he and Margaret bought a hobby farm between Chaska and Chanhassen. Carolyn, Chris, Patty, and Carl have wonderful memories of living there- playing in the pastures, exploring the woods, tending the gardens, and taking care of the animals.
In 1978 Milo and Margaret built a home on a beautiful wooded ravine in Chaska. It became the center of family gatherings and holidays for their kids and growing grandchildren. During this time Milo became a Realtor in Carver County. He sold real estate for many years before his retirement.
Milo and Margaret retired to Lake City in 2002 where they enjoyed fishing, boating, and exploring the beautiful Lake Pepin area. They had many happy years there together. It was a gathering place for their children and grandchildren and many special memories were made there. Sadly, Margaret passed away in 2010. Milo lived on his own there for a few years, but illness forced him to move to an assisted living apartment in Waconia, where he could be closer to his children.
Milo's faith was always important to him. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Brookfield Township where he was baptized and confirmed. He was one of the founding members of the mission church Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Victoria. At Crown of Glory Lutheran Church in Chaska he served on the Church Council, was Church Treasurer, and served on the Building Committee. In Lake City Margaret and Milo were active members of First Lutheran Church.
Milo was a devoted and caring father and grandfather. His grandchildren adored him because of his playful sense of humor, his fun-loving personality, and his genuine interest in each of them. Hikes with him in his Chaska ravine would be an exciting adventure. Boating and water skiing became a favorite activity with him in Lake City and staying at Grandma and Grandpa's was like being on a fun vacation! A favorite memory is of Milo waving good-bye with his "peace sign wave" as his family headed home - after his reminder to "watch for deer!" He enjoyed fishing and watching the Twins and Vikings.
He will be deeply missed by his children - Carolyn, Chris, Patty and Carl; his sons-in-law Terry and Tom, daughter-in-law Shirley; sisters Shirley Ann and Loretta, and his brother-in-law Art; as well as his eight grandchildren - Allison (Ryan) McCleary, Taylor (Kirsten) Scholz, Rebecca Scholz, Michael Tosney, Calli Tosney, William Tosney, Madeline Wehking and Lindsey Wehking. His three little great-grandchildren - Emmett and Miles McCleary and Nora Scholz - were blessed to get to know him.
Milo was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his parents Carl and Mamie Wehking, his brother Myron Wehking, sister Arlene Kolle, and infant sister Donna, as well as his brothers-in-law Edward Lund, Rodney Kolle and Clifford Mortenson.
