Mildred Doreen Hassler was born on April 13, 1923 in Howard, South Dakota to Herman and Magdalena (nee Wunder) Hassler. The family moved from South Dakota in 1926 settling in Pine Island. Her father died when Mildred was seven years old, leaving her mother to raise seven children in tough economic times. To cope with the hardships of life, the family was especially fond of teasing and playing practical jokes, and finding simple past times like sliding down the muddy banks into the river next to their home. She was confirmed in Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island in 1937 and currently was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. She set her cap for Donald Krause, the brother of a good friend. They fell in love and married on August 24, 1946. They were blessed with 66 years together.
Mildred worked hard on the dairy farm beside Donald, doing whatever was necessary. She raised chickens, and for many years supplied fresh eggs for her customers. She was an excellent cook and baker.
After selling the farm in 1984 and moving into Pine Island, she and Donald took several bus trips across the country. They also enjoyed spending more time at their lakeside cabin in Longville, MN. Mildred enjoyed pretty flowers, wildlife, and taking in the scenery of God's beautiful world. She played the piano and enjoyed music of all kinds, especially hymns. She loved spending time with family and friends.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Donald; a son, Harley (Diane) Krause of Pine Island; a daughter, Lori (Daryl) Jessen of Dakota City, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Sarah Krause, Heather Krause, Luke Jessen, Joshua Jessen, Magdalena Jessen, Micah Jessen, and Grace Jessen; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey Jessen, Brock Jessen, and Bryn Jessen. She is also survived by a brother, Sino (Dorothy) Hassler and a sister-in-law, Lucille Hassler all of Pine Island, and numerous other family and friends. She will be sadly missed dearly, but is now at peace with Jesus.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Esther Stoll and Kathryn Forbeck; and three brothers, Earl Hassler, Warren Hassler and Perry Hassler.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Saviors Lutheran Church Building Fund.
