Michael Schammel

Michael John Schammel, age 78, of Red Wing, died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was born on August 24, 1929, in Rose Creek, Minnesota, to Arthur and Catherine (Fink) Schammel. He attended and graduated in 1947, from schools in Rose Creek and worked for the Rose Creek Creamery. On February 5, 1951, he married Harriet Olson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Schammel Oil Company and Riverside 66 in Red Wing for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville, the Knights of Columbus, Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post 54, Burnson-Lillyblad VFW Post 1218 and the All Vets Honor Guard. An active volunteer, he drove for Meals on Wheels. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet of Red Wing; three children, Jeanne (Steve) Lindstrom of Plum City, Wisconsin, George (Pat) Schammel of Red Wing, and Jim (Jeanne) Schammel of Red Wing; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur of Austin, Minnesota; two sisters, Bette Michels of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and Sue (Pat) Geagan of Eagan, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were one brother, three sisters and one granddaughter.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Miesville, with Father Jay Kythe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Jordan, Blake, Sam and Ben Schammel, Curt and Nicholas Krull. Honorary pallbearers will be Christine Lindstrom and Nicole Schammel. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and one hour prior to the time of services Monday at the church.
