Michael “Mick” Patrick Collins, 85, of Red Wing, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Deer Crest Senior Living in Red Wing where he has resided for the past two years. He was born on January 2, 1939, in River Falls, WI to LeRoy “Bud” and Lucille (Evans) Collins. Mick graduated from Mondovi High School in 1957, the University Wisconsin-River Falls in 1961, and received his master’s and specialist degree from Winona State University. Mick married Karen Gabus and they were blessed with three children, Pat, Meg and Amy. Mick taught for one year in Marshall, Wisconsin before he and Karen moved to Red Wing in 1962. Mick taught and later became principal at Jefferson Elementary, was assistant principal and later principal at Twin Bluff Junior High and then principal at Sunnyside Elementary retiring in 1998, after 35 years in education. He was an active member of United Lutheran Church and was a founding member of the Roundy Club. Mick enjoyed fishing, taking a number of trips to Canada with Pat, going to the family cabin in Wisconsin and attending his grandchildren’s many activities. In his younger years he coached his children with their sports, coached YMCA baseball and oversaw the summer recreation program.
Mick is survived by two children, Pat (Cheryl) Collins of Prior Lake and Meg Christianson of Woodbury; four grandchildren, Alexandra and Brandon Collins and Marit and Mack Christianson; three sisters, Kathy Collins and Kay (Joel) Weisgram both of West Fargo and Mary Beth (Mike) Bjurquist of Prescott; one brother, Danny (Linda) Collins of Stillwater along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen on January 10, 2013, daughter, Amy Collins and son-in-law, Michael Christianson.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Burial will at the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2024, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Red Wing School Foundation or United Lutheran Church.
