On Sunday, June 12, 2016, Michael James McKay passed away in Red Wing, Minnesota, at the age of 65. Mike was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the second son of Archie and Ruth McKay. He grew up in a large, loving family, with three sisters and six brothers. He attended Cretin High School in St. Paul, and continued his education at St. Cloud State University. Mike married Nancy Martin McKay shortly after their college graduation. Together they raised four children - Casey, Molly, Evan, and David. Mike would be the first to say his children were his greatest accomplishments.
Mike had a successful career in sales and marketing, working for General Electric Company for seventeen years, before moving his family to Red Wing and working for RAM Center. He retired as Vice President of Sales and Marketing from PAR Systems in 2005. He left retirement to manage the St. James Hotel in Red Wing for seven years, a position in which he took great pride. Mike was dedicated to his local community, serving as Chairman of the Wacouta Town Hall Board. He was especially committed to the preservation of Lake Pepin, serving on the Clean Water Council for the State of Minnesota and as Executive Director and acting President of the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance.
Although he left us too soon, Mike lived a full life, raising his family and seeing them grow on the shores of the lake he loved so much. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Archie McKay, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughter Casey and her family (Dane Ball and their children Jack and Duke), his daughter Molly and her family (Dan Steffen and their children Logan, Amelia, Theodore, and Elliott), his daughter Evan and her family (Matt Wetzel and their child Jude), and his son David. And he is survived by his siblings, Patrick (Patti) McKay, Larry McKay, Mark McKay, Mary Susan McKay, Paul McKay, Andrew (Kory) McKay, Mary Elizabeth Weissinger, Mary Margaret (Michael) Connolly, sister in law Deirdre McKay; and many nieces and nephews.
Mike's family wishes to express their gratitude to his wonderful care-givers at the Mayo Clinic, Red Wing Hospice, and his community of neighbors, friends, and family who provided great support, companionship, and care throughout his illness.
A private family service will take place at the Villa Maria followed by burial at Wacouta Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held in honor of Mike on Friday, June 17, from 1:00 - 4:00pm in the Summit Room at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota.
