Michael Verne Johnson, 66, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester with his family by his side. He was born December 24, 1948, in Red Wing, to Calvin and Betty (Koplin) Johnson. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1967 and was presented the All Star Student Award in Industrial Arts. After high school he attended St. Paul College, graduating with a degree in Engineer Drafting. On December 6, 1969, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Johnson at First Covenant Church. He worked a short time at Meyer Industries before entering the family grocery business. He co-owned and operated Corner Grocery and Burnside Red Owl until he semi-retired in 1996. During his retirement, he spent much of his time refinishing antique furniture. He was a member of First Covenant Church where he had served as financial secretary, treasurer and trustee. Mike enjoyed spending precious time with his grandchildren and sharing similar hobbies with his sons. He also enjoyed woodworking, antiquing, reading and history, going to flea markets, refinishing old gas pumps and making banks out of old post office boxes. He was also a fan of Red Wing Girls Varsity Hockey, Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Kathy of Red Wing; two sons, Chris "Vern" (Briana Nash) Johnson of St. Paul and Nate (Missy) Johnson of Red Wing; two grandchildren, Avi and Kroix Johnson; two brothers, Gary (Donna) Johnson of Holcombe, Wisc. and Brian (Pam) Johnson of Red Wing; sister, JoAnn (Dave) Dammann of Red Wing and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Alyssa in 2002.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2015 at First Covenant Church with Revs. Rick Carlson and Tim Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, August 27, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
