Michael Lane Hennes

September 26, 1956 — March 29, 2018

Mike Hennes, 61, of Pine Island, MN, died March 29, 2018 at Seasons Hospice after a long battle with ALS.

Born Michael Lane Hennes on September 26, 1956 in Minot, ND, he answered only to Mike. Mike graduated from Minot High School in 1974 and from Bismark State College in 1990. He had served in the the North Dakota National Guard for 14 years.

Prior to his illness, Mike had most recently been a process server and a realtor in SE Minnesota. Before moving to the Rochester area, Mike worked in Antarctica for 14 months as a foreman for the Antarctic Support Associates at McMurdo Station, where he was responsible for the station's heating and building maintenance. Mike has also been a boiler operator and worked in industrial maintenance in Minnesota, North Dakota, Kansas, Missouri.

Mike enjoyed cooking, green woodworking, carving spoons, sporting clays, competitive shooting, vacations in New Mexico,, and spending time with his extended family. He enjoyed working with his hands and learning new skills and especially enjoyed the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN.

Mike is survived by his wife Penny (Strom), sister Ann and brother-in-law Leroy Loder, sister-in-law Margaret (Joe) Hennes, sister-in-law Shirley (Jim) Haugen; 13 nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Rose (Kelly) Hennes, brothers Jim and Joe, and sister Arlyn Blanz.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, April 8, at 2 p.m. at 125 Live in Rochester, MN, with visitation to follow. Memorials preferred to Seasons Hospice or the ALS Association MN/ND/SD chapter.
