Meta Hertha Bender, 83, of Red Wing, died Monday, January 15, 2007, at St. Brigid?s at Hi-Park. She was born on April 1, 1923, in Schlesien, Germany to Oscar and Pauline (Miscke) Rother. She graduated from high school in Germany in 1941 and in May of 1958 she came to Red Wing. On October 28, 1958, she was married to Adolph Bender at St. John?s Lutheran Church in Red Wing. For several years she worked as a cook at Haven Homes. Meta and her husband enjoyed traveling, including several trips to Germany to visit family and friends. Adolph died on March 13, 1993. A member of St. John?s Lutheran Church, she was active in the ladies guild, served on the funeral luncheon committee and visited shut-ins of the congregation. She enjoyed nature, animals, gardening, traveling, shopping and attending Bible classes. Meta is survived by many friends, including, Marty, Sue, Josh and Anna Busch of Red Wing and one cousin, Horst Haupt of Hanover, Germany. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers in Germany. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 18, 2007, at St. John?s Lutheran Church with Rev. Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be in the St. John?s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marty and Josh Busch, Detlef Bordthauser, Neil Diercks, Phil Revoir and Jack Tomhave. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the church or donor?s choice. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
