Merlyn Brunkow 84 of Lake City, MN. passed away on Thursday July 30, 2009 at his residence in Lake City, MN.
Merlyn was born October 30, 1924 to Ferdinand (Pat) and Elsie (Sass) Brunkow in Wabasha County, MN. He attended the Geppert School through the 8th grade. In 1943 Merlyn entered the US Air Force serving in World War 2 in the South Pacific. He was a Gunnery Engineer. He was discharged as a Tech Sergeant in 1946. On October 21, 1946 he married Lois Eggenberger at the Methodist Church in Lake City, MN. The couple made their home in Lake City where Merlyn was a carpenter, he then joined the Police Force in 1952 and was promoted to Police Chief in 1958 -1981. They then owned Brunkow Trucking and did local hauling for ten years. Merlyn played the guitar and was in a band named "Fun Seekers." He also loved to hunt, fish and camp. He was a lifelong member of the VFW #8729 and Past Commander and Modern Woodmen member.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter Merilyn (Bruce) Walters of Mazeppa, MN; son Neil (Carol) Brunkow of Lake City, MN; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, two sisters, Irene Prigge, Wilma Krause; three brothers, Kenneth, Fred and Marvin Brunkow, and a great granddaughter, Matilyn Ann Brunkow.
A Memorial Service will be on Wednesday, August 5th at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lake City with the Rev. Don Jones officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 - 8 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson - Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour prior to the services at the church. Military Honors will be handled by VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post #110. Memorials preferred to donor's choice.
