Melvin C. Kish age 92 of Zumbrota died on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. Funeral service is scheduled for Friday, August 13, 2010 at 2:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa with Reverend Alan Horn officiating. Burial will be in Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, August 12, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Melvin Clifford Kish was born on February 13, 1918 in Red Wing, MN to John E. and Martha C. (nee Luhman) Kish. Melvin's father died when he was two years old and his family moved to his maternal grandparent's farm in rural Goodhue. He attended country school in Goodhue for two years before his mother remarried and his family moved to rural Zumbrota, where Melvin attended Zumbrota Schools. Melvin worked as a farm hand until his marriage on June 4, 1941 to Lola A. Ehlers on her parent's farm. They farmed in Zumbrota Township until 2001 when they moved into Zumbrota. In 1956 Melvin was awarded the Minnesota Soil Saver Award for South Goodhue County. Melvin and several of his neighbors also did carpentry and masonry work. Melvin did volunteer work and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa where he served as Treasurer for six years. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing cards, watching the MN Twins and Vikings on television and visits from family and friends. Melvin is survived by his wife, Lola of Zumbrota; son, Gary (Ginny) Kish of Rochester; daughter, Nancy (Larry) Cullip of Millville; five grandchildren, Christine ( Rick) Henne, Jason (Kerri) Cullip, Roger Kish, Jennifer Kish, and Amanda Kish; seven great-grandchildren, Heather Fuchs, Kayla Henne, Emma Henne, Alex Cullip, Natalie Peyer, Zachary Cullip and Kailey Cooper. Melvin was preceded in death by his father, John; mother and stepfather, Martha and Emil Olson; two brothers, Blair and Floyd Kish; and an infant granddaughter.
