The funeral for Melvin L. Carpenter will be Wednesday May 21st at 11:00 AM at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester. The Reverend Gary Benson and the Reverend Carol Solovitz will co-officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Carpenter, 84, of Rochester, died Friday May 16, 2008 at his home.

Melvin LeRoy Carpenter was born September 7, 1923 in Bay City, Wisconsin. He grew up in Red Wing and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served from 1943 to 1948. When the war ended in Europe, he played hockey in the Air Force.

He married Elaine Romness on June 4, 1948 and moved to Rochester shortly after. His wife worked for the Rochester School System for 24 years. She died November 6, 1999. Mr. Carpenter worked at the Post Office as a letter carrier for several years, retiring as a postmaster in Elgin in 1985. He worked at Marquette Bank from 1985 to 1993. Mr. Carpenter was a member of the Senior Center and was a member of VFW Post 1215 for more than 50 years. He was quite a baseball fan, and loved the Twins and the Cubs. He loved to bake and enjoyed baking fruit breads to give away.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Pam Burton of Rochester and Julie (Don) MacDonald of Webb Lake, Wisconsin; 2 sons, Scott (Kelly Brenno) of Rochester and Tim (Ann Koth) of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by 4 sisters, a brother, a grandson, and a son-in-law.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home on 37th Street NW in Rochester. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
