Melfred was born November 6, 1930, the son of Rudy and Emma (nee Siems) Dahling in rural Hay Creek. He attended country school, St. John's Lutheran School, and graduated from Goodhue High School. He married Marjorie (nee Frank) on July 21, 1951, and they had four children. He was a lifelong farmer and worked at Zumbrota Livestock Auction Market in its early days. Over the years, he raised, bought and sold thousands of cattle which were his livelihood as well as his "hobby". He was "forced" to retire in July, 2009 due to health problems; however, he was able to haul some hay bales and a load of cattle in the summer of 2010, "farmed" from his recliner, and transacted one cattle deal in October of this year. Melfred was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Melfred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marge; three daughters, Randi Carlson, Deborah (David) Gnotke, Roxanne (Richard) Lodermeier; one son, Michael (Robin) Dahling, all of Goodhue; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Joan Hinsch of Goodhue; six brothers/sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by son-in-law, Charlie Carlson; his parents; his mother/father-in-law, Jack & Ruby Frank; one sister, Henrietta Windhorst; and two brothers-in-law.
