Maxine Anna Nelson, 86, of Red Wing, died Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. She was born May 20, 1921 in Plum City, Wisconsin to Richard and Carrie (Breunig) McCardle. Her family moved to Belle Creek, Minnesota and she attended high school in Cannon Falls. When she was 16, she graduated from high school and then went to teacher's training and began teaching country school in Belle Creek at the age of 17. She married Everal Nelson on September 28, 1946 and they resided in Red Wing. In 1960, she began teaching 4th grade at St. Joseph's School. She taught and worked as a religious education coordinator for the church and school until 1983. After retiring from teaching, she continued to volunteer for the church. She was a member of the St. John's Hospital Auxiliary Pink Ladies and she had been a blood donor for many years. As a resident of Jordan Tower II for the past five years, she enjoyed visiting and making friends with her fellow residents. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include daughter, Pam (Ted) Johnson of Red Wing; son, Charley (Maureen) Nelson of Red Wing; four grandchildren, Libby Johnson, Lyndsay, Cammy, and Grady Nelson. Preceded in death by husband; and one brother, Vernon McCardle.
Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Libby Johnson and Lyndsay, Cammy and Grady Nelson. Visitation is an hour and a half before the service at the church. Memorials preferred to SOAR or Youth Outreach. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
