WEST CONCORD A memorial service for Maxine M. Avery will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Hope Summit Christian Church, 1315 5th. Street S.E., in Rochester; the Rev. Aaron Wager will officiate. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery.
Mrs. Avery, 81, of West Concord, died Sunday (Aug. 15, 2010) at Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center.
Maxine Mae Voxland was born Dec. 14, 1928 to Manton and Terra (Young) Voxland on the family farm in Holden Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. She attended country school and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1946. She moved to Minneapolis and worked briefly before her marriage to Tom Avery on Sept. 7, 1947. She was a homemaker, raising seven children. Maxine was an extremely good hostess, who always kept the cookie jar full, caring for many guests over the years. She enjoyed sewing, raising house plants, restoring antique artwork, reading, and attending auctions. As a youth she attended Holden Lutheran Church. She was baptized as an adult at the Concord Church of Christ. Then joined the West Concord Church of Christ where she was a very active volunteer, always preparing the communion for weekly worship. Memberships include the West Concord Church of Christ, the Fortnightly Club of Dodge Center, and the Dodge County Republican Party. She was a volunteer at the West Concord Public Library. Maxine was especially proud of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She traveled with her husband to Texas, Florida, and California visiting relatives. She lived briefly in Phoenix, Ariz., Redwood Falls, and Buffalo, Minn.
She is survived by five sons, Kent (Diana Grant) of Corona, Calif., Ross (Rebecca) Riverside, Calif., Dean (Janice) of Bloomfield, Iowa, Leon (Deborah) of West Concord, and Neal (Kelly) of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two daughters, Iris Clark (Dale) Neumann of Eyota; and Beth (Breck) Avery-Dokken of Polk City, Iowa; 21 grandchildren, Amos, Seth, Scot, and Kurt Avery; Amanda, Doron, Tyrel, and Logan Clark; Kaiya, Ryan, and Mariah Avery; Evan, Tate, and Will Avery, Erin Donato; Emily Dokken; Ashley Larish, Whitney Dressel, Levi, and Dune Avery; and Thomas Avery; 24 great grandchildren; two sisters, her twin sister, Marilyn Miller, of West Concord; and Virginia Schrader, of Northfield; and her brother, Paul Voxland, of rural Kenyon. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who died July 15, 2008, her sister Lois Utter, and son in law, Ross Clark.
Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home Rochester Chapel, and one hour before the service at the church.
