Max L. Allen age 82 of Zumbrota died suddenly on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at his home. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the New Life Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Pat McBride officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow, Iowa at a later date. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Max Lyle Allen was born on December 12, 1925 in Washta, IA to Ralph J. and Iva Mae (nee Nafe) Allen. He spent his early years in Washta and Quimby, IA and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in Grand Meadow, IA in 1943. Max attended York College and graduated in 1947. On June 18, 1948 he married Mary Alice Riggs in Ames, IA. He graduated from Bonebrake Seminary in Dayton, OH in 1950.
Max pastored at the Evangelical United Brethren in Cranston, IA for ten years. In 1960 they moved to Minnesota and Max worked with the Volunteers of America at the Bar None Ranch in St. Francis and in 1971 he became the director of the Galloway Boys Ranch in Isle. He was on the National Executive Board and served a term as National Religious Life Secretary for the Volunteers of America.
Max was stricken with polio at age four which weakened his right leg. His love of horses gave him the legs he used to help teach kids character and also in his ministry.
Max retired in 1988 and continued to be active with horses. He enjoyed grades, Arabians, POA's, Appaloosas, and finally the exotic Spanish Paso Fino, studying blood lines in depth for his Classy Speed Pasos.
Max is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mary Alice, his children, Ted (Karen Seay) Allen of Edina, Nancy (Larry) Hendry of Isle, MN, John (Pam) Allen of New Hope, MN, Scot (Becky) Allen of Branson, MO, Joy (Joretta Marshall) Allen of Fort Worth, TX, Ross (Annie) Allen of New Brighton, MN, Amy (Jeff) Kelly of LeMars, IA, daughter-in-law, Anita Allen of Zumbrota, 21 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his sister, Reva Tomlinson of Spencer, IA, and three brothers, Claire (Phyllis) Allen of Akron, IA, Lowell (Elaine) Allen of Meridan, IA and Verle (Kay) Allen of LeMars, IA.
Max was preceded in death by his parents and son, Mark.
The family suggests memorials to Samaritan's Purse or Mission Aviation Fellowship.
