Mary Lou Tomfohrde, age 87, of Zumbrota passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Rochester - St. Marys Campus. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 1:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church - Bear Valley with Pastor Alan Horn officiating. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday for two hours prior to the service at the church.
Mary Lou Greer was born on September 13, 1929 in Lake City, MN to William and Ruth (nee Muckelberg) Greer. She grew up in rural Zumbro Falls, attended elementary school in Zumbro Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School in Lake City in 1947. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for Phoenix, Budget Loan Company in Rochester. On September 16, 1948 she married Gerald A. Tomfohrde. They farmed together in Chester Township until 1970. Mary Lou raised the chickens and continued to help on the farm until 1978. In 1980 they moved to Oronoco and Mary Lou worked at Fashion Crossroads at Apache Mall in Rochester. Mary Lou also served as Treasurer for the Canadian Honker Motor Home Club for many years. After they retired, they used their motor home to winter in Arizona with many stops in Branson, MO. They traveled the world together and enjoyed meeting new people on their trips. Mary Lou loved to do crafts, paint ceramics and do cross stitch. She also enjoyed bowling and her card club. Mary Lou was past chairman of the Women's Committee of Wabasha County Farm Bureau and was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church - Bear Valley, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was past president and treasurer of the Ladies Aid.
Mary Lou is survived by her children, Susan Matthees of Eagan, Terry (Rhonda Rucker) Tomfohrde of Mazeppa and Bob (Heidi Sager) Tomfohrde of Cumberland WI; grandchildren, Jamie (Carl) Majerus, Colt (Tina) Tomfohrde, Chelsie Tomfohrde and fiancé Austin Loiland, Cody Tomfohrde and friend Danica Haman, Jessica (Troy) Kurth and Brandon (Kristin) Matthees; great-grandchildren, Brandt and Britain Tomfohrde, Sidney and Aidan Majerus, Annabel and Joseph Kurth and many nieces and nephews.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; parents; brother, Harold Greer and sister, Dorothy Fuhrman.
